Internet Explorer & Mozilla Firefox

The debate begins.
Basically, here I am comparing Firefox and Internet Explorer - not necessarily taking sides. Instead I'm just proving which browser is better.

The Name

The name, for a start - Internet Explorer. How original, but I will say that Microsoft leaves no doubt to what it's products are. To quote the words of my Dad, something he read off an article in a newspaper - "If they made toilet paper, they'd sell it as butt wiper."

Firefox could be anything - to me, a band, a car, or a restaurant. Browser would be my last guess, and would you agree? But still, much more tasteful.

Round 1 Winner: Firefox.

Logos

I.E Logo     Firefox Logo

The logo for Interenet Explorer isn't exactly killer, is it? An 'E' with a ring around it. But, compared to the old ones, it's good enough.

One thing you can say for the Firefox logo - it's terrifying. A fox with its tail on fire attacking the Earth, well, it is imaginative but maybe not quite ideal for a browser. And I.E should win something, at least.

Round 2 Winner: Internet Explorer.

Google Search Results

Here is the question typed into the famed Google toolbar:

Why does Internet Explorer crash all the time?

This brings up 2.57 million results - that's 2,570,000 results.

When the question is changed to 'Why does Firefox crash all the time?', only 218,000 results are found.
Against I.E's, impressive.

Round 3 Winner: Firefox.

Installation

Installing I.E 7 means you have to restart your computer, disable virus software, Windows validation, and a connection to Microsoft. Not only that, but it is recommended that we back up important files, close all programs... hardly boosting our confidence.

However, Firefox only requires you to close the old version of Firefox, and it's much faster. Plus, if converting from I.E., it will copy all your bookmarks, favourites, etc.

Round 4 Winner: Firefox.

Usability, Safety & Standards

I.E has a good full screen view, with the tabs and address bar disappearing until you hover over them. However the tabs are very chunky. Plus, I.E is bad at reading HTML/ CSS, and has a wild percentage for doing it wrong. It also saves all of your typed passwords into a file which is impossible to delete.

Firefox, however, has many tools to make it easy to customise. I.E has this too, but not in the same way as Firefox does. It also does have an option to delete passwords and such private data, e.g. passwords, credit card numbers, PINs, etc. It also has much less bugs then I.E does, and you can change themes, too and get all these fancy add-ons. Groovy.

Round 5 Winner: Firefox.

Tabbed Browsing

I.E. has only just caught onto tabbed browsing - whereas Firefox has used it for years. I.E has a thumbnail viewer, too (CTRL + Q), yet Firefox lets you reload all tabs at once. Both browsers allow you to move tabs around as you like, and highlights the active tab. However, too many tabs and they shrink and two little arrows appear on the left or right of the tab bar - in both browsers.

Firefox does have a thumbnail few, but as an add-on rather than coming with the browser. The drop-down menu next to the tabs is a good shortcut, so you can find recently viewed pages. However after 12 tabs the horrible arrow comes into play. If Firefox crashes, however, you may restore the tabs - and I.E. can't.

Round 6 Winner: Firefox.

The Results

Internet Explorer: 1
Mozilla Firefox: 5

I used to use I.E. a lot, but the thing is - Firefox is better, and you will not regret the change. It's cleaner, neater, quicker and personally, I.E is so old it needs a walking stick. Get Firefox?
